DuPont Launches new GM Soy Oil

March 19, 2008: 12:00 AM EST
DuPont's Pioneer Hi-Bred unit has produced a soybean oil high in oleic acid, which means that it does not have to be hydrogenated for frying and food processing, and therefore has “negligible” levels of trans fats. The oil’s stability also means it is easier to transport and is suitable for industrial applications. DuPont has not released full details of its tests. The oil will be sold under the Treus brand. It is still subject to regulatory approval from US and European Union authorities. Europeans are more suspicious of GM crops than Americans, where fears about trans fats outweigh concerns over biotechnology.
