EC Restates Position on Cleaning Fish

March 14, 2008: 12:00 AM EST
The European Commission has restated its position that only drinking or clean water can be used to remove “surface contamination” on fish. It has written to the fish trade and industry, and trading standards and environmental officers, stating that the EC has not approved any substances for removing “contamination on the surface of any products of animal origin”. The letter says that the position may change in the future, because a number of applications have been made to approve other substances.
