Getting Your Flax Right

February 1, 2008: 12:00 AM EST
Flaxseed continues to generate intense debate over its omega-3 benefits and effectiveness in comparison to fish oil. Its ALA content is well known but better market awareness of conversion rates to EPA/DHA is needed. Some supporters of fish oil are playing down the importance of ALA. But there is no doubt that EPA and DHA intakes in North America (130-150mg/day) are well below the levels recognized to achieve optimal health. The flax industry, led by the Flax Council of Canada, is gathering evidence on the seed’s heart health benefits to petition the Food and Drug Administration for a Qualified Health Claim.
