New Look at Vitamins K and D

February 1, 2008: 12:00 AM EST
Vitamins K and D are important for bone health but a recent Dutch study shows that different factors are involved in K-1 and MK-7. High intakes are required for those with a short half-life, the study suggests, although MK-7 preparations supplying 50mcg/day may interfere with oral anticoagulant treatment. A Japanese study indicates that K-2 might combat rheumatoid arthritis, which could be a significant new direction for research. Studies of the effect of vitamin D in women indicated that it works better when combined with K, with marked changes in bone marrow density. Different delivery methods, such as fat-containing capsules and solid tablets, also seem to influence results.
