Top Tier Health Seekers

March 18, 2008: 12:00 AM EST
A select group of 50 million consumers is driving health and wellness in the US, says the Natural Marketing Institute, and the split between this 25 percent and the rest of the population is the biggest trend in the industry. Linked to this is the growing realization by corporations that health and wellness is an important factor in increasing productivity of their employees. Self-reliance in health is an emerging trend, and there is particular interest in healthy aging products, omega-3, calcium, probiotics, sexual vitality, anti-inflammatory and sleep and anxiety. At the same time, there is a growth industry in organic foods and allergy-free alternatives, as people become more worried about the home and work environment. One third of consumers are seeking ways to reduce inflammation in their bodies. Lastly, baby boomers are a huge slice of the market, 26 percent of the population, with 70 percent of the nation's net worth. They look for wellness and experience as well as vitality and recovery from products.
