Ubiquinone Reduces Fatigue

March 26, 2008: 12:00 AM EST
CoQ10, also known as ubiquinone, “improved subjective fatigue sensation and physical performance during fatigue-inducing workload trials and might prevent unfavorable conditions as a result of physical fatigue”, according to Japanese researchers. They found that healthy volunteers taking 300mg per day CoQ10 and undergoing a fatigue test on a bicycle ergonometer had a higher rate of maximum velocity than the placebo group or a group taking 100mg a day.

Choices Reviews Criteria for Symbol

March 26, 2008: 12:00 AM EST
The Choices program is reviewing its criteria for allowing foods to carry the Choices Symbol. The program was set up in the Netherlands in 2006, and its founding members (Campina, Freisland Foods and Unilever) set up the Choices International Foundation the following year, to take the scheme to the international market. Most of the products currently using the symbol are in The Netherlands, although the scheme is also being used in Belgium, Brazil, and Chile, and in the US by Unilever. Food companies in Poland, Germany, Portugal and South Africa are expected to start using the stamp in the next few months. By the end of this year, Choices aims to have local foundations and partners in around 10 countries. The criteria currently used by the scheme were developed by two independent scientific committees in The Netherlands and Belgium, and are based on WHO guidelines for saturated fat, trans fatty acids, sodium and added sugar. National dietary guidelines from 21 different countries were also compared when developing the criteria. The program's new International Scientific Committee was set up this year in order to "broaden the scientific basis and strengthen the scientific argument."

Sterol Chocolate Boosts Heart-Health

March 25, 2008: 12:00 AM EST
A daily dose of sterol-fortified dark chocolate can help people with elevated cholesterol levels improve their cardiovascular health, according to a recent study from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Regular consumption of the sterol-containing chocolate bar resulted in reductions of both serum total and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol. Consumption of cocoa flavanols reduced systolic blood pressure.

Study Links Guidelines to MetS

March 25, 2008: 12:00 AM EST
Sticking to healthy diet guidelines reduces the chances of suffering from metabolic syndrome (MetS), a condition that increases a person's susceptibility to cardiovascular disease and diabetes, says a report published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. The study was part-funded by the Agricultural Research Service. It is thought to be the first to explore the link between the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGAs) and the prevalence of MetS. However, it does not prove cause and effect, or look at the type of diets and lifestyles that older participants had at earlier stages in their lives, which would have affected their susceptibility to MetS. Researchers also don’t know if the sample they used was representative of all adult Americans.

Coffee Creamers Add to Fat Intake

March 25, 2008: 12:00 AM EST
Watch your intake of coffee creamer, the Center for Science in the Public Interest is warning consumers. The consumer watchdog group says that nutritional information on coffee-creamer labels is based on a teaspoon-sized serving, whereas most people use a tablespoon or so – three times as much. Many people would be better off using even full-cream milk instead, CSPI says. Nestle, one of the major coffee creamer producers, disputes CSPI’s findings, saying its labels comply with Food and Drug Administration rules.

Ten Reasons for Energy Drink Success

March 21, 2008: 12:00 AM EST
Ten factors are behind the success of energy drinks, according to a new report by The Centre for Food & Health Studies. “The 10 Key Factors for Success in Energy Drinks - Europe and the US” puts “A benefit that the consumer can feel” at the top of the list. This is followed by focus on one benefit and one brand at two and three; lifestyle marketing (4); innovation in packaging and distribution (5 & 6); premium pricing; internationalization and Asian innovation. The report also cites widespread energy deficits and the relative ease with which ingredients such as caffeine, guarana, and taurine can be incorporated into products as reasons for the success. The US energy drink market reached $5.7 billion in 2006, according to Packaged Facts, which predicts it will grow to $9.7 billion by 2011. Zenith International put the European market at $4.8 billion in 2006.

DuPont Launches new GM Soy Oil

March 19, 2008: 12:00 AM EST
DuPont's Pioneer Hi-Bred unit has produced a soybean oil high in oleic acid, which means that it does not have to be hydrogenated for frying and food processing, and therefore has “negligible” levels of trans fats. The oil’s stability also means it is easier to transport and is suitable for industrial applications. DuPont has not released full details of its tests. The oil will be sold under the Treus brand. It is still subject to regulatory approval from US and European Union authorities. Europeans are more suspicious of GM crops than Americans, where fears about trans fats outweigh concerns over biotechnology.

Groups Challenge FDA View on Clones

March 19, 2008: 12:00 AM EST
Lobby groups including the Center for Food Safety say that an internal Food and Drug Administration report shows that many consumers are opposed to eating food from cloned animals. The FDA released a risk assessment in January saying that there is no evidence that products from cloned animals pose a risk to human health. Risk assessments look at scientific evidence, not consumer perceptions of risk.

Top Tier Health Seekers

March 18, 2008: 12:00 AM EST
A select group of 50 million consumers is driving health and wellness in the US, says the Natural Marketing Institute, and the split between this 25 percent and the rest of the population is the biggest trend in the industry. Linked to this is the growing realization by corporations that health and wellness is an important factor in increasing productivity of their employees. Self-reliance in health is an emerging trend, and there is particular interest in healthy aging products, omega-3, calcium, probiotics, sexual vitality, anti-inflammatory and sleep and anxiety. At the same time, there is a growth industry in organic foods and allergy-free alternatives, as people become more worried about the home and work environment. One third of consumers are seeking ways to reduce inflammation in their bodies. Lastly, baby boomers are a huge slice of the market, 26 percent of the population, with 70 percent of the nation's net worth. They look for wellness and experience as well as vitality and recovery from products.

GRAS Status Sought for Vit E Product

March 18, 2008: 12:00 AM EST
Food safety experts in Australia have concluded that Phosphagenics Ltd’s Phospha E® is GRAS (General Regarded as Safe) for use in breakfast cereals, juice beverages and table fats. Phospha E is a derivative of vitamin E, and aids vitamin E absorption and activity. The company is preparing a GRAS notification to inform the Food and Drug Administration of the expert panel’s conclusion. If the agency has no further comment, GRAS designation allows manufacturers to produce and sell foods that include Phospha E in the US food industry.

Hybrid Mouse Eats More, Weighs Less

March 17, 2008: 12:00 AM EST
Scientists have developed a new, lean mouse that points the way to manipulating a protein in humans to help treat obesity and its related diseases and disorders. The hybrid mouse is deficient in protein kinase C beta (PKCB), allowing it to eat more than normal but have less fat than normal. However, Kamal Mehta, senior author of the study and a professor of molecular and cellular biochemistry at Ohio State University, says it could take years to develop an appropriate therapy for humans. It’s not known if the protein deficiency exists naturally in humans. It appears to have no ill effect on the health of mice.

WHO Urged to Adopt Code for Children

March 17, 2008: 12:00 AM EST
Two international lobby groups plan to present the World Health Assembly with a new code that would restrict the marketing of unhealthy foods to children. The groups, The International Obesity Taskforce (IOTF) and Consumers International (CI), claim that the food industry is failing to self-regulate, especially in developing countries. They plan to lobby WHO members to support their code, the International Code on Marketing of Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages to Children. The WHO was given a mandate last year to develop its own recommendations on marketing to children, and is expected to begin consulting members over the next 12 months.

FDA to put Agents in China

March 17, 2008: 12:00 AM EST
The Food and Drug Administration is to establish eight positions at US diplomatic missions in China over the next 18 months to carry out checks on Chinese food products, provided final approval comes from authorities in Beijing. The State Department has approved the move, which springs from ongoing concerns about the safety of food and food products from China. Washington and Beijing agreed to work together to improve food safety in December 2007. The agreement with China is part of the FDA's Beyond our Borders initiative which "facilitates the building of stronger cooperative relationships with the FDA's counterpart agencies around the world and enhanced technical cooperation with foreign regulators".

EC Restates Position on Cleaning Fish

March 14, 2008: 12:00 AM EST
The European Commission has restated its position that only drinking or clean water can be used to remove “surface contamination” on fish. It has written to the fish trade and industry, and trading standards and environmental officers, stating that the EC has not approved any substances for removing “contamination on the surface of any products of animal origin”. The letter says that the position may change in the future, because a number of applications have been made to approve other substances.

Junk Food to Retain Tax Exemption

March 14, 2008: 12:00 AM EST
British Columbia has no plans to remove the sales tax exemption from junk food, despite pleas from the chair of an all-party committee that recommended this action in 2006 and a call from obesity experts to impose disincentives on junk foods and make healthier foods cheaper. The latest call came mid-March when the Heart and Stroke Foundation of B.C. and Yukon hosted two events at the University of B.C. featuring some of Canada's top experts on obesity. Ralph Sultan, chair of the select standing committee on health, dismissed business objections as “malarkey” but also admitted the proposal wouldn’t do much to slow sales of junk food. However, it would send the right message, he said.

SunOpta’s bid to buy Dutch organic food ingredients company Tradin Organic Agriculture appears to be back on track after it was delayed because of internal financial problems at SunOpta. The company has financial and legal concerns, including lawsuits in New York over its alleged failure to correctly inform shareholders of accounting irregularities that under-estimated the value of asset write-downs and over-estimated the value of berry supplies. However, it recently signed a deal to begin building a new organic and natural oil refinery in Colorado in a joint venture with Colorado Mills.

Fatty Fish Good for Infants

March 11, 2008: 12:00 AM EST
The children of mothers who eat two servings of fatty fish a week have better vision than other children, says Sheila Innis, head of the nutrition and metabolism program at the Child & Family Research Institute at BC Children's Hospital, and professor at the University of British Columbia. "During pregnancy and breastfeeding, fat consumed by the mum is transferred to the developing baby and breastfed infant, and this fat is important for the baby's developing organs,” Innis says.

Oldways Forms Med Diet Alliance

March 10, 2008: 12:00 AM EST
Non-profit “food issues think tank” Oldways has formed an alliance of companies that make or import Mediterranean food products in a bid to boost the advantages of the diet. The Mediterranean Foods Alliance aims to improve consumer health by increasing awareness and consumption of Mediterranean foods and drinks. It is an extension of Oldways’ existing Med Mark scheme, which helps shoppers identify Mediterranean products through a packaging label. A Mediterranean-style diet, rich in fruit, vegetables, olive oil and fish, is thought to help reduce the risk of dying from cancer and cardiovascular disease.

Mango Peel Boosts Biscuit Quality

March 6, 2008: 12:00 AM EST
The fiber content and antioxidant properties of bakery products could be boosted by mango peel powder (MPP) without affecting their overall quality, say researchers at India's Central Food Technological Research Institute. Mango peel is usually discarded in the manufacturing process, but the researchers found it could be formulated into soft dough products. Other studies have also shown the antioxidant qualities of MPP.

Snacks Set for Up-Turn, says GIA

March 5, 2008: 12:00 AM EST
Global Industry Analysts says that the snack food market will be worth $300 billion by 2010, driven by healthier products and developing markets. Earlier reports suggested that the market would suffer because of consumer perceptions that snack foods are high in fat and salt. Asia Pacific, Latin America and Eastern Europe are seen as the markets with the most potential, with growth predicted to be about 6 or 7 percent up to 2010. Products regarded as unhealthy in the West, such as potato chips and crisps, are also becoming more popular in Latin America, while cheese snacks and pretzels are on the rise in Asia Pacific. Trans-fat free and meat-based snacks are also expected to take off.

Fatty Acids Affect Genes

March 4, 2008: 12:00 AM EST
Dietary fat is a very important regulator of gene expression, researchers from Wageningen University in the Netherlands have found. In a paper published in the journal PlosONE, the researchers said dietary unsaturated fatty acids govern a huge number of genes, almost entirely by a special receptor called PPARa (Peroxisome Proliferator Activated Receptor alpha). Mice were fed individual fatty acids in the form of synthetic triglycerides and it was found that DHA has the most significant impact and changes the expression of around 600 genes.

Emulsions Create Low-Fat “Cheese”

March 4, 2008: 12:00 AM EST
Water-in-oil-in-water (W/O/W) emulsions can be used to create reduced-fat cheese-like emulsions that compare in taste and texture with full-fat cheese made from high-fat milk, say Mexican researchers. Several different emulsions (also known as triple-phase emulsions) and combinations of emulsions were tested on a panel of 80 people, who found that the products were acceptable, although there was a clear preference for particular emulsions. The researchers were affiliated with the Universidad Autonoma Chapingo, Univers-idad Autonoma Metropolitana-Iztapalapa, and the Universidad Autonoma del estado de Mexico.

Shift to Natural Medicines

March 4, 2008: 12:00 AM EST
Business is improving for health and wellness stores because of the greater emphasis on a healthier lifestyle. In some cases, consumers without health insurance are turning to alternative medicines, while doctors are suggesting prescriptions that are more natural. To counter the growing use of the internet for cheap medicines, stores need to emphasize quality and maintain good customer service.

Multinationals Target Indian Companies

March 4, 2008: 12:00 AM EST
Multinational corporations and Indian nutraceutical companies appear to be keen to talk to each other about possible acquisitions, according to mergermarket. L’Oreal said last year it was keen to acquire an Indian ayurvedic (Indian herbal solution in nutraceuticals) company, and Coca Cola has said it is “quite keen” to look at relatively small acquisition targets that have expertise in nutraceuticals. Nestle, Danone, Amway and the Korean natural gas company are also looking at possibilities in India. On the other side, Chennai-based EID Parry says it is “quite open” to discussing strategic stake options with large MNCs abroad, and Floriana, another Indian nutraceutical player, says it is keen to discuss strategic sale options for its nutraceutical business.

Milk Supply Problems Easing

March 1, 2008: 12:00 AM EST
Global milk supply problems have been putting pressure on international protein-isolate manufacturers, but the tide has turned, according to one company. Production dropped in major milk producing countries because of bad weather last year, at the same time as demand surged for animal proteins in China, India and other places. However, Danish dairy giant Arla says that supplies are returning to normal levels.

Amino Acids Poised for Growth

March 1, 2008: 12:00 AM EST
A number of studies published in 2007 point the way to the potential of amino acids to affect mood. There are now many products on the market designed to stimulate or relax the mind, and promote mental alertness. The 2007 research adds addiction treatment, mental stress and anxiety to the list. Among products showing potential are N-acetyl cysteine, L-lysine, L-arginine, L-cirtrulline, and the big gun, L-carnitine. Two trials that show consumer-relevant benefit are all that’s needed to launch a product, so the 2007 papers may open a few doors.

EC Proposal May Slash Approval Times for Novel Foods

March 1, 2008: 12:00 AM EST
Novel foods may be approved for use in the European Union within a year of application rather than the current three years if proposals currently under consideration are accepted. The novel-foods regulation requires authorization for foods and ingredients not present in the European Union's 27 Member States before May 1997. Under the revised proposal it would be sufficient to demonstrate a history of safe use in the country of origin. New foods and ingredients would no longer have to be first submitted to individual member states but would go straight to the European Food Safety Authority. This revision alone could slash average processing times to one year. Other areas of the proposal include codifying more transparent novel foods and ingredients criteria.

Neutraceuticals Bloom

February 29, 2008: 12:00 AM EST
The global nutraceuticals market is predicted to rise to $187 billion by 2010, dominated by the US, Europe and Japan, which accounted for 86 percent in 2007. A report by Global Industry Analysts says the US accounted for 37 percent of sales in 2007, while Asia Pacific is the fastest growing market because of China and India and increasing wealth. Competition will increase, driven by factors such as price, safety, efficacy, packaging and brand loyalty. Greater consumer desire for leading a healthy life continues to drive sales. Other factors include an expanding elderly population, as well as escalating health care costs. The report says functional foods are a rapidly growing segment. Growth in dietary supplements is expected to slow, particularly in developed countries as the category fast approaches maturity levels.

GI Foods Study Starts

February 29, 2008: 12:00 AM EST
Leatherhead Foods is conducting a year- long study into the satiety effects of the Glycaemic Index and whole foods. The research will compare short and long-chain carbohydrate, with both employing a bread matrix using a variety of grains and flours. A control group will consume only water. Many European countries, most notably the UK, have products and labeling schemes but Sweden is the only one to officially approve a low-GI health claim.

Study Raises Fears Over High-Dose Vitamin E

February 29, 2008: 12:00 AM EST
Long-term use of high doses of vitamin E may slightly increase the risk of lung cancer in smokers, says a report from the University of Washington. Otherwise, the study of 77,721 men and women aged between 50 and 76 found that there was no evidence of benefit or harm from taking multivitamins, vitamin C, or folate. Other studies have linked vitamin E to an increased risk of “all-cause mortality”, and a recent meta-analysis by researchers from Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School showed that high intake of vitamins A, C, E and folic acid do not reduce the risk of lung cancer.

Ginkgo Might Help Boost Memory in Elderly

February 28, 2008: 12:00 AM EST
A study in Neurology suggests that Ginkgo biloba may boost memory in the elderly. Researchers from Oregon State University report that the supplement could reduce the risk of developing mild memory problems by 68 percent in healthy older people with no memory problems, provided the dosage instructions are followed strictly. No general benefits were found in younger people. The three-year study involved 118 people age 85 and older with no memory problems. Results were particularly significant for those people who took the supplements exactly as directed. However, a slight increase in the risk of a stroke or mini stroke was observed. Gingko has been used by the Chinese for thousands of years as a medicine. It contains flavoglycosides antioxidants that have been shown to have neuro-protective effects in animal models of spinal cord injury.
